Roto — Privacy Policy

Roto (“we”, “the app”) helps you privately keep track of the people you’re dating and the dates you’ve been on — and, if you choose, share selected dates with friends or anonymously with the community. We built Roto to be private by default: you control what, if anything, you share. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.

What we collect

Account information. When you create an account, we store your email address (and, if you choose Sign in with Apple, the identifier Apple provides) and your phone number. Your email or Apple identifier is used to sign you in and sync your data across your devices. Your phone number lets friends who already have your number find you on Roto; it is never shown on your public profile or shared with anyone.

The information you enter. The people in your rotation and your date logs — names, statuses, ratings, notes, places, dates, and similar details you type in — are stored in your private account so they back up and sync to your devices.

Friends and shared content. If you connect with friends or share a date, we store the minimal information needed to show it: your friend connections, and — only for items you choose to share — your display name (friends only), a date’s initials and rating (friends only), or an anonymized post (a “showcase tag” like “a Knicks fan,” your age, a rating, and your notes/icks with identifying details removed). See “Friends and sharing” below.

Reactions and reports. Emoji reactions you add to posts, and any reports you submit, are stored to operate the feed and support moderation.

Notifications. If you allow notifications, we store a device token so we can send the weekly “blast” notification.

On‑device only (never uploaded). Photos you add, voice‑memo audio, and a person’s Instagram handle are stored only on your device and are not uploaded to our servers.

Information we do NOT collect

• We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers. Your rotation is private — content is shared with friends or the public feed only when you choose to share a specific item.
• We do not read your text messages, social media, or other apps.
• We do not track you across other apps or websites.

Permissions you can grant (optional)

These are only used at the moment you choose them, and the underlying data is not stored on our servers:

• Contacts — used only if you ask, in two ways: if you tap “Add from Contacts” to fill in one person’s name/phone/photo (which stays on your device), and if you tap “Find friends from contacts,” where Roto checks the phone numbers in your address book against Roto’s users to show which of them already have the app. For matching, only phone numbers are checked — they are not stored, and your contacts’ names never leave your device.
• Calendar — only if you tap “Import from Calendar,” to turn an event into a logged date.
• Microphone & Speech Recognition — only if you record a voice memo; transcription happens on your device.

You can change or revoke these anytime in your device’s Settings.

How your data is stored

Account data and the rotation/date information you enter are stored using Supabase (our cloud database provider) and protected by security rules so that only your account can access your data (except content you choose to share). Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS).

Friends and sharing

Roto’s social features are optional, and you control all of them:

• Friends. You connect with people by sharing an invite code. A friend can see a date only when you choose to share it — and only your name, the date’s initials, and your rating.
• Anonymous public posts. If you share a date “anonymously,” it appears with no name and no initials — only a showcase tag (e.g. “a Knicks fan”), your age, a rating, and your notes and icks. Before any anonymous post leaves your device, identifying details — names, places, restaurants and bars — are automatically blacked out on your device. The unredacted text is never uploaded.
• The weekly blast. Each week a few of the most-reacted anonymous posts may be featured in a public feed.

Nothing is shared unless you tap to share that specific item.

Community content and moderation

Because the feed can show content from other people, you can report any post and block any account at any time (on each post, and in Settings → Safety & Legal). We review reported content and remove violating content and accounts, typically within 24 hours. The in-app Community Guidelines and Terms of Use set out the rules; there is zero tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behavior.

Deleting your data and account

• You can delete individual people, dates, or your whole rotation at any time in the app.
• You can delete your entire account in Settings → Delete Account, which permanently removes your account and all associated data from our servers.

Children

Roto is intended for adults (17+) and is not directed to children under 13.

Changes

We may update this policy; we’ll revise the “Last updated” date above.
